Custom website vs Wix and WordPress: what should a small business choose?

Every website decision comes down to a trade-off between speed of setup, running cost and control. Builders, WordPress and custom development each win on a different one. This is the comparison written the way we'd explain it to a friend over coffee, including the situations where a builder is genuinely the right answer.

Website builders: fastest to start, most expensive to keep

Wix, Squarespace and Jimdo let you have something online this afternoon, and for a market stall or a brand-new idea that is exactly right.

The costs show up later. You pay every month for as long as the site exists, the templates are shared with thousands of other businesses, the generated code is heavy enough to hurt mobile loading times, and moving away later means rebuilding from scratch.

WordPress: flexible, but it needs an owner

WordPress still runs a huge share of the web and can do almost anything through plugins. That flexibility is also the problem for a small business: every plugin is code someone else maintains, and outdated plugins are the most common route into a hacked site.

A WordPress site needs regular updates, backups and a person responsible for them. If that person is you and you enjoy it, great. If nobody is doing it, the site quietly degrades until something breaks.

Custom development: fast, owned, and quoted once

A custom-coded site ships only what your business needs. No plugin stack, no page builder overhead — typically sub-second loading on mobile, which directly affects both conversions and rankings.

You own the result outright, there is no platform subscription, and the design is genuinely yours rather than a theme your competitor two streets away also bought. The trade-off is that adding entirely new functionality later means a developer, not an app store.

Side by side

For a typical five-page local business site:

  • Time to launch: builder, hours. Custom, around 48 hours. WordPress, one to three weeks.
  • Three-year cost: builder around €1,000+. WordPress around €1,500–€3,000. Custom from roughly €500.
  • Mobile speed: custom is consistently fastest; builders and plugin-heavy WordPress lag.
  • Ownership: full with custom and self-hosted WordPress; rented with a builder.
  • Maintenance effort: near zero for custom, monthly for WordPress, none for builders.

Our honest recommendation

If you are testing an idea and might abandon it within six months, use a builder and spend nothing more. If you run a business that already has customers and you intend to keep it for years, a custom site pays for itself — usually within the first year, through faster loading, better rankings and no subscription.

Choose WordPress when you specifically need its ecosystem, such as a large multi-author publication, and you have someone to maintain it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit a custom website myself?

Yes. Text and images can be made editable, and small changes are included in our maintenance plan if you'd rather not touch anything.

Is a custom site harder to rank in Google?

The opposite. Clean code, fast loading and correct page structure are exactly what search engines reward, and they are easier to get right without a plugin stack.

What if I already have a Wix or WordPress site?

Content usually transfers directly, and the domain moves with you. Existing rankings are preserved when redirects are set up properly during the move.
